A Cheap Part Guarding an Expensive Engine
Inside the engine, the crankshaft and camshafts have to turn in exact relationship. On many engines a toothed rubber belt is what links them.
Rubber ages. Heat, oil contamination and plain time take their toll, and manufacturers set a replacement interval by kilometres or years. Go past it and you're gambling.
On what's called an interference engine, a snapped belt lets the pistons strike open valves. That can mean bent valves, a damaged head, or worse. A planned belt change costs a fraction of that repair.
Timing belt jobs come up in our Google reviews more than most repairs, so it's work we do regularly.
Know What's in Your Engine
| Timing belt | Timing chain | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Reinforced rubber with teeth | Metal links, like a bike chain |
| Where it lives | Behind a cover, usually running dry | Inside the engine, lubricated by oil |
| Replacement | At a set interval in the handbook | Designed for long life, replaced if it stretches or gets noisy |
| Warning signs | Often none before failure | Rattle on start-up, timing-related fault codes |
| What helps it last | Replacing on time, fixing oil leaks nearby | Regular oil changes with the right grade |
What Gets Replaced With the Belt
Most of the labour is in getting to the belt. Replacing the parts it works alongside at the same time avoids paying for that labour twice.
Timing belt
The belt itself, matched to the engine code.
Tensioner
Keeps the belt at the right tightness; a worn one can let it jump teeth.
Idler pulleys
Bearings that guide the belt and wear at a similar rate.
Water pump
On engines where the belt drives it, it's usually sensible to replace it at the same time.
We'll tell you exactly what your engine's kit includes and quote it upfront. Seals that are leaking oil onto the belt area get attention too, because oil degrades rubber.

“My SV6 2012 Holden Commodore Wagon was due its 250k full service. … Since the service I've drove to Karratha and back for work and I was getting 7/800kms from a full tank of 95 fuel. The car runs even smoother than before.”
“After the initial inspection, everything was explained to me prior to the work being carried out. They didn't overcharge for unnecessary extras, which is a breath of fresh air in the auto service industry.”
“Great service from Stephen. Great workmanship from the team. Fair pricing and and a job well done.”
Timing Belt FAQ
How do I know if my car has a timing belt or a chain?
Your handbook's service schedule usually lists a belt replacement if there is one. If you're not sure, give us the make, model and year and we'll check for you.
How long does a timing belt replacement take?
It varies a lot by engine. On some it's a few hours; on others, with tight engine bays, it takes much longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with the quote.
I just bought a used car with no service history. Should I do the belt?
If the car is near or past the interval and there's no proof it's been done, it's the safe choice. Our pre-purchase inspection can flag this before you buy.
Can a timing belt be inspected instead of replaced?
Sometimes we can see cracks or wear, but a belt can look fine and still fail. Replacing it on schedule is the reliable approach.
